"Unlocking Wisdom: Learn from Everyone Around You | Confucius' Timeless Lesson"

“Among any group of three people walking together, there must be someone who can be my teacher.” This quote comes from The Analects of Confucius, Chapter “Shu Er.” It means that when several people walk together, there will surely be someone from whom I can learn. We should learn from others’ strengths, and when we see their shortcomings, we should use those as a warning to reflect on ourselves—correcting our own faults if we have them, and being more vigilant if we don’t. This sentence reflects Confucius’ attitude of “following what is good in others, and changing what is not good in oneself,” and emphasizes the importance of learning from those around us and improving by adopting others’ strengths. The meaning of this saying can also be understood as: “Three people” represents a group, and is not limited to literally three individuals. It implies that anyone around us could become our teacher. “Walking together” can be understood as words and actions, or as moving forward together in life, meaning that whether through conversation or through shared experiences, we can observe, reflect, and learn.
